(Chicago, IL) The Pitch and Hit Club of Chicago, a professional baseball service organization, has announced that Chicago Cubs' standouts Derrek Lee and Carlos Zambrano will be among the honorees at the club's 60th Annual Baseball Awards Banquet on Sunday, January 15.
The event is scheduled for 6:30 PM at the Donald E. Stevens Convention Center Ballroom in Rosemont, IL. A long list of current and former players will also be available to dinner attendees for FREE autographs prior to the dinner. Members of the autograph table include the aforementioned Lyons as well as Curtis Granderson, Ron Coomer, Dan Pasqua, Buzz Capra, Bill Pierce, Rich Nye, Hal Lanier, Eric Soderholm, Larry Monroe, Bill Campbell, Bob Miller, Bill Sharpe, Gene Hiser, Howie Bedell, Tony Cogan, and more to be announced.
Lee will be recognized as the Chicago Cubs' major league player of the year and Zambrano as the Cubs' pitcher of the year.
"We are excited to have these outstanding players joining many other honorees on the dais this year." stated Pitch and Hit President Peter Caliendo. "Derrek and Carlos performed spectacularly in 2005 and are certainly deserving of this recognition."
Lee, 30, was in serious contention for the triple crown for most of the 2005 season. Always a fine fielding first-baseman with a solid bat, he established himself as one of the National League's most feared hitters in ' 05, finishing with 46 homers, 107 RBI, 120 runs scored, 50 doubles and a
.335 batting average.
The 24 year-old Zambrano has been the mainstay of the Cubs' staff for the last two seasons. He followed a breakout year in 2004 with a solid 14-6, 3.26 campaign in '05, including 202 strikeouts. His emotion-filled performances on the mound have made him a favorite with Cub fans.
Lee and Zambrano will be joined by a long list of Chicagoland baseball celebrities and dignitaries at the dinner, which is the longest running and only winter baseball dinner in Chicago. Other honorees will include broadcasters Pat Hughes and John Rooney as well as professional and amateur coaches, players and executives including: Roland Hemond, Gordie Gillespie, Rene Gayo, Buzz Capra, Larry Monroe, Roger Wexelberg, Dick Goss, Chad Ernsberger, Bill Angelo, Jim Hall, Kevin Feeney, Fran Pell, Ron Biga, Patricia Bello, and Mary Kellens
Masters of Ceremonies at this years' event will be local media
personality Tom Shaer and former White Sox first baseman and current national television commentator Steve Lyons. White Sox' organist Nancy Faust will provide the pre-dinner music. A raffle and silent auction featuring top flight sports memorabilia will also be a part of the festivities.
